A CIDADE MAIS ANTIGA DO MUNDO: COMO É JERICÓ NA PALESTINA ONDE JESUS VIVEU E TEM CONFLITO COM ISRAEL

Have you ever wondered what the oldest city in the world would look like? With more than 10,000 years of history, it is a land that resists over time, and is still disputed by several nations. A place of sacred events that keeps secrets that may never be revealed. A mountain full of caves, which housed an illustrious figure. It was here where Jesus fasted for 40 days, 40 nights and where he was tempted by Satan. We’ve got inside the monastery hanging on the cliff. We’ve found the 2,000-year-old tree. As Zacchaeus was short, he decided to climb a tree, that tree, to see Jesus better. We discovered the Fountain of Elisha. Not this one… This one, where a miracle would have happened. Elisha went there and took away these sins, the impurity of the city, and left the water clean for cooking, laundry, everything. Speaking of miracles, we’ve tested some beauty products that are only available here, and seem magic. Did it really work? Come with us, discover the oldest city in the world. Welcome to Jericho, on the West Bank. Hi guys, good morning! Look at us starting another exceptional day. After all, we are currently at the oldest city in the world, we are in Jericho, on the West Bank. It is a Palestinian territory, with a lot of history to tell. For you to have an idea, Jericho was mentioned in the Bible more than 70 times. This place right behind me is the Mount of Temptation, where Jesus fasted for 40 days, 40 nights, where he was tempted by satan twice. There’s a lot to see all around, much has happened here, and from now on we’ll show you what the oldest city in the world is like. By the way, not only the oldest but also the lowest city in the world. It’s a lot of history, it’s fascinating, you’ll follow with us from now on. We start by locating you. Jericho is located in the Judean desert, 15 km from the Dead Sea and 10 km from the border with Jordan. The city is not in Israel, but in Palestine, a non-continuous territory, with just over 5 million inhabitants. The areas in red on the map indicate where Palestine is. Since the creation of the State of Israel it has been divided into two parts: the West Bank, with about 3 million people, and the Gaza Strip, with 2 million, and is governed by the Palestinian Authority. When we are getting close to Jericho, we start to see some signs like this one, where it is written that this road leads to a territory under Palestinian authority, and that Israeli citizens are forbidden to enter, with peril of death. They warn you about that in the three languages, Hebrew, Arabic and English, however, despite being a grave hard warning, for tourists it is peaceful, you can visit here, it’s no problem at all, it’s in fact interesting to be able to visit the oldest city in the world. We just thought it would be useful to warn you about this notice. So, let’s continue the journey. Our first stop is Mount of Temptation. Calm down, to get up there we will have some little help It is possible to reach Mount of Temptation like this, by cable car. It’s approaching now and it takes you 1,350 meters high to the top to see everything up close, the caves, the mountain itself, and of course, have a beautiful view of Jericho. Let’s go then. It costs 120, we paid 120 shekels, round trip, for both of us. Let’s visit it now. While we buy the tickets and get ready to go, you must have noticed that we we’ve said the price of the cable car in shekel, the Israel currency. Yeah, shekel is the official currency here in Palestine as well. For you to have an idea of values, before arriving in Jericho, while in Israel, we stopped at a very famous fast food restaurant to eat and check the prices, check it out: Basically, one shekel equals BRL 1,50. So, just multiply by one and and a half. Do you want to get an idea of how expensive it is? Well, I’m here, look, with this sandwich, super famous, and the combo costs 38 shekels, or BRL 57,00. Did you find it cheap or expensive? Let me give you some tips. First and foremost, never buy shekel in Brazil, forget about it, Firstly, it’s hard to find, and when you succeed, it’s very expensive. Back to Jericho, tickets in hand, time to take the cable car to Mount of Temptation. Now, we’re going up to the top. Let’s go, I’m excited. Once the cable car ride is over, we arrive here at the top of Mount Temptation. Let me give you some information while enjoying this breathtaking landscape. Why is Jericho so important? Why did Jesus used to come here? Because Jericho is located precisely between the Sea of Galilee, where most of Jesus’ miracles took place, and Jerusalem. It was indeed a crossing point. This is where Jesus fasted for 40 days, 40 nights, and where he was tempted by Satan. Do you see this countless number of caves? It was here, in one of these caves, where Jesus lived. After that, this is the place where monks chose to live, 1,700 years ago, precisely because Jesus lived here, was tempted, fasted, they chose this region to isolate themselves. A great number of monks lived in all these caves, and then they built a monastery right here on top of the mountain, I’ll show you in a moment. The 15th century monastery is an impressive piece of work. We walk through narrow corridors between the mountain and the buildings we see from below. This space is the entrance to the cave where the first temptation is believed to have taken place. We get inside carefully, because it gets tighter and tighter, until we reach the Cave of Temptation in the back, a dark and small place. Before taking the cable car again, some information: there is a restaurant and a snack bar here. Check it out, we’ve even found a fan of the Brazilian soccer team. On the way down, you have a panoramic view of Jericho and can even see the region of the ruins where the walls of Joshua’s time were. Another must-see in the city is the Fountain of Elisha. Look how beautiful this place is, perfect for a photo, right? On the floor, a mosaic reminds us that we are in the lowest city on Earth, and on the wall is an inscription indicating "The Oldest City In The World", with 10,000 years of history. Everything is beautiful here, but this is just for the photo, as despite the name “Fountain of Elisha”, this is not the original one. The one that appears in the sacred scriptures is much more hidden, and we are heading there now. One of the most important and sacred places in Jericho is the Fountain of Elisha, where we are now. Why is it so important? Because this was the only source of water in Jericho, but it was bad water, then, what happened? The prophet Elisha came to Jericho and a resident said: "can you go there, take a look and try to do something for us?" Because they couldn’t do anything without good water. The prophet Elisha came to this fountain threw salt in it, turned bad water into good water and completely changed the city’s quality of life. It was as if he had cleaned water, impure due to the sins of the people, Elisha removed these sins, these impurities, left the water clean, for cooking, for washing clothes, for everything. This is the original fountain, it’s still here, to access it, there’s a little door that stays closed, it costs 5 shekels, but it’s awesome to learn about the history of the oldest city in the world. We’re at a very busy intersection in Jericho, right in front of this tree, look, it’s a wild fig tree, or Sycamore. What does it have to do with the history? It is associated with Zacchaeus history. Zacchaeus was a wealthy man, a tax collector for the Roman Empire, said to have a dubious nature. He desperately wanted to see Jesus when Jesus was passing by. However, Jesus was always accompanied by a large crowd. As Zacchaeus was short, he decided to climb a tree, that tree, to see Jesus better. When Jesus passed by, surrounded by many people, he called Zacchaeus by his name and said: “- Zacchaeus, come down from that tree, I’m going to spend this night at your house." The crowd went crazy. “What does it mean? Will Jesus spend the night in a sinner’s house?" In order to redeem himself, Zacchaeus donated half of all his assets to the poor. Is this the real tree of Zacchaeus? I don’t know, but some tests confirm that this tree right here, can be about two thousand years old. What do you think, huh? Is this the tree that Zacchaeus climbed more than two thousand years ago? Anyhow, Jericho is not only history. As we’ve already mentioned, the city is close to the Dead Sea, and for this reason, there is no shortage of beauty products with peculiar characteristics. We’ve found a Brazilian store here in Jericho, right? – Pleasure! – Where are you from? – São Luís do Maranhão. – São Luís do Maranhão. For how long have you been here? – Since 2004 – Oh, almost yesterday! You have barely arrived. – Yes! – There are only products from the Dead Sea here. He said he will do something in my arm now, I don’t know what will happen, but that’s miraculous, right? – Yes! – Let’s go then. Here is my arm, let’s see what will happen. – Let’s go! A mask and mud, concentrated with many minerals extracted from the Dead Sea. Then you put it on your face like this, with the spatula, after cleaning your face at night, once a week, spread it with your hands, leave for 8 to 10 minutes, kind of a mask, it works on the pores, wrinkles, and whitening of the face skin. – OK! – After 8 to 10 minutes you will try to remove it using a napkin, you will rub it from side to side. – Oh, it doesn’t clean. – It doesn’t clean. – It seems that it mixes more, right? – You will cause a lot of irritation on the face skin without successfully removing the mask. Neither water nor tonic can remove it. – What to do then? Am I going to keep this here for the rest of my life? To remove this type of mask, the only way found by the manufacturer, without removing the main ingredients below, is using a magnet like this one. – A magnet! But how do I get this magnet? – The magnet comes with the mask. – Oh, does it come with the mask? – Yes, it does! – Oh…. – If I just get a bit close, look! – Oh, crazy! – Look at that! – That’s insane! My Gosh! – Look how easy it is to remove. – It’s like a mask vacuum cleaner. – Just look. – Look at this – This way you remove the mask leaving the main mineral ingredients that are here. – Wow, you can see it here, look. – That’s right. – Look at it. After removing the mask from your face, you don’t have to wash your face with water, – or use a tonic, or anything. – Just leave it this way. – Spread these minerals with your hands all over the face. – So, I will have to come here every year to get this. – We send it to you in Brazil, you receive at the door of your house. – Wonderful! Thank you very much, I loved it.
