The great thing about traveling through New Zealand on your own is that you can choose how much time time to spend in each place you are passing by. This time we rented a car, and while driving along these beautiful roads, we ended up in Wanaka.
It is not far from Queenstown, about 70 km. It would take around an hour by car, but for sure you will drive in a very low speed to enjoy the wonderful landscape along the way. Following, we got to this very famous lake.
It’s area is 192 km², and the depth can reach 300 meters. However, the most curious thing, is that there is a very famous tourist spot in Wanaka that is a little unusual. Of course we want to see it and record very special images to show you.
When you surf the Net looking for New Zealand, you will always see at least one little picture of this incredible place in Wanaka. The trees here are all green, but in the background, the mountains are super white, because it’s Spring. The temperature isn’t very low,

Exactly as we are doing in Wanaka, and, by the way, what many people do. We walked all the way around the lake to find the most famous tourist spot in the city, this one…turn here… A tree. Yes, this tree is the most famous tourist spot here in Wanaka, simply because it is beautiful.
It is the most photographed tree in New Zealand, and considered one of the most photogenic trees in the world. It is so important that there is na exclusive point of it on Google Maps. It’s so famous that it’s called “That WanakaTree”. If you look for it on Google Maps, it will appear #ThatWanakaTree.
It’s this one, really beautiful. It’s very crowded behind me, because everubody wants to take a photo with the tree. Today the lake is super dry, so it’s possible to get very close to it, but often it is completely surrounded by water. Then you can only take pictures from very far.
As it is dry, we are going there, of course. The water of Lake Wanaka comes mainly from glaciers, meltwater, and rainwater. Today the level of water is very low, but often it can rise up to 1 meter. That branch at the bottom of the tree almost touches the water,
Causing a totally different scenario. Depending on when you come, this is the image you will see. You may be able to do the same thing she is doing there now. Or, it’s possible that you will have to swim to get to the tree. It’s curious how the hashtag #ThatWanakaTree began.
Well, of course, this is a different tree, right? It is in the middle of the lake and has a completely different shape. But that hashtag actually started as a joke. More and more people started taking pictures with the tree, and then the photographers
Started to treat the subject with a certain disdain, like: look, it’s the photo of that tree, that tree again. That’s why it became famous as That Wanaka Tree. The photographers started to post the photos, and write: “look, I also have a photo with that tree, my photo with that tree is like this…”
Three years later, the tourism in the city officially adopted the hashtag That Wanaka Tree and put it on the touristic circuit of the city. It became so famous that what we see the most now is this… a big line waiting to take a picture with That Wanaka Tree. It never ends!
