When you come to Antarctica you can’t forget your binoculars, after all, in addition to all this wonderful landscape, you will look for wildlife, right? Penguins, whales, where will they appear? Will it be close to the ship? It might be, but it could be at a distance, so you’ll need binoculars to see it. Bring a camera as well, if possible with good lenses, so you can record all these stunning moments. I will give you the definitive answer right now, it doesn’t matter whether you think you know, because I have the scientific answer to give you: both are correct, my friends! you can say either Antartida or Antarctica. But why are there two different names? It’s certainly not because you have to say that the continent is called Antarctica Antarctica and you can’t call the region Antarctica, the region is just Antartida, it’s nothing like that, both ways are correct, and I’ll explain exactly why they exist. Firstly, Antarctica comes from anti-Arctic. The Arctic was discovered first, so, when this here was discovered, it became the anti-Arctic, hence Antarctica. There is even my size, it’s very comfortable. There is water here, some glasses. As it is all included, you can consume whatever you want. Here’s also a minibar here, which is actually fully stocked. I’ll try to show you; it’s got a bunch of sodas, so you can have whatever you’d like. Here is a very important piece of information for you, room service is already included! You can order whatever you want, breakfast, dinner, late-night snack, Room service is also included in your cruise, which is nice! On this side is the bathroom, let me show you, it’s already open. The bathroom is very small, I won’t lie, and here is the shower, with curtains. We managed to fit our toiletry bags in there and everything. The bathroom is not large, so you have to be aware that you won’t have so much space to take a shower, but it is enough. On this side there is space for you to put your things, our backpacks are here, there are drawers, a lot of storage space, after all, it’s a long cruise, if you want to take your things out of the suitcase, it is great. However, what really matters is what’s out here, our balcony, with this incredible view of Antarctica. Guys, I think it’s simply wonderful to see everything with binoculars. One thing that really impressed me the last time we came to Antarctica and that continues to impress me, it is to be right here, is to wake up in the comfort of your cabin, look at the window and see a glacier, look at that, a thousands and thousands year old glacier, right in front of you. It’s truly ravishing, and now the scenery is glamorous, with this blue sky contrasting with the sea, with this water that seems dark, but that is absolutely translucid, with the ice shining, it’s enchanting. Some people send comments saying: "oh, am I going to leave my house just to feel cold and see ice?" In truth, you will leave your house to see the most stupendous landscapes of your life, like the one we are seeing here now. It’s really exciting to be here and be able to witness a spectacle of nature, a work of God like this. It’s incredible, it’s so worth it. Many people are curious to know who actually owns Antarctica. Antarctica does not belong to anyone, it is an international territory, but several countries have research bases here. We are right in front of a Chilean base, look, you can see the Chilean flag there. There is a boat here, do you see that little orange boat behind me? They are researchers from that Chilean base who came to the ship to talk to the passengers and teach them a little about their work, what they do and the preservation of this area in Antarctica. Now they are returning to the base, how interesting. And we’re here admiring this landscape, it is freezing cold, but I’m protected in a bathrobe. But its really cold. This landscape is so breathtaking that I can’t leave the balcony. We are starting the third day of expedition through Antarctica aboard Azamara Quest. I have to say that we are starting with a spectacular view, we are at Deception Island, a volcanic island that had several eruptions. It is an island, an active volcano that had eruptions in the recent past, I mean, recent for a volcano, a few decades ago, and this is a place with lots of penguins, lots of whales, lots of life, that’s precisely why the ship will stay here for a while, going around the island. We are already seeing some incredible formations here, look at these rocks appearing out of the water. Here is where the island really begins, and it has a half-moon shape with a hole in the middle, where the volcano would be, is really cool. We stay here for about an hour on this island, then we’ll continue our journey, passing by South Shetland Island, which is right at the beginning of South Shetland Island, and then head north towards Ushuaia. For now, let’s enjoy this third expedition day, take a look at this marvelous scenery. It’s amazing to be here. Guys, look how nice, The weather is so cold they serve hot chocolate to passengers outside. I’ve obviously got one, it’s thick, tasty, and warms up your body, it is delicious. And we continue here observing, taking different routes around the island to see it from various angles. With some hot chocolate, it’s even better. Yum! However, with a storm coming, our return was brought forward a few hours Look at this!! Can you see that there is a huge iceberg here, almost as big as the ship? And you can’t see anything. That’s it! So we stay here. It’s cold, no view, but the weather can change in 5 to 10 minutes, clear up, and the sun might come out, revealing the island. This is amazing. It’s cold though. I’m leaving, it’s freezing. Antarctica is being left behind, we are heading towards the American continent again, so, it’s time to face the feared Drake Passage once again. I have to say that we are really lucky, look at this, we are crossing a Drake Lake. Do you know what this is? That’s how they call Drake Passage when it is calm, like a swimming pool, easy to face, all decks are opened you can stay outside. Drake Lake means a peaceful ocean, unlike Drake Shake, which can have waves r eaching 8, 10, 12 m high, it shakes a lot and sometimes they even close everything, you have to stay inside your cabin for safety reasons and they take the food there for you. It’s really calm now. We’re facing 2m waves here, it’s even calmer than the day we went there, as at that time we got Moderate Drake, with 4m waves. Let me prove that I’m telling the truth, that today Drake is really calm. Look at this, the pool and the Jacuzzi are open, full of water, and no water is being spilled outside of them, it’s absolutely normal. Guys, look where we are now, it’s a special visit indeed at the ship’s bridge, That’s exactly where we are right now, look how cool! As you can see, there are several officers here, they are in charge now, as the captain is not here yet. Needless to say that obviously this is the place with the most beautiful view of the ship. Look how wonderful it is. Let me tell you something interesting. We are visiting the bridge during Drake Passage, that’s a proof of how calm Drake is today. Something important, there is never only one person here in control, there are always some people in charge, the captain, and one person stays here the whole time, just looking with the binoculars, seeing what’s coming ahead, after all, despite the great amount of control equipment, the human eyes are never replaced, day and night there is someone here, paying close attention to the path ahead. You must be curious to know what these little things are, aren’t you? The captain told us that these are gifts they receive at ports they have a stop, and then, in those moments of tension, when they feel stressed, they look at the gifts and relax, they become happy and calm. Which one did you like the most? I liked this one, the sailor duck. I’m sitting on the captain’s chair, the central chair, with the best view, where all the equipment is, and naturally I will tell you something interesting: We imagine that to control a ship like this, we would use just the ship’s wheel, t hat’s right here, obviously. This is not an ornament, in fact, it’s still used, normally in ports, because it’s theoretically much better for controlling the ship. So, arriving or leaving ports, where they need to be more accurate, when you have riskier maneuvers, you use the wheel, otherwise, we don’t steer the ship like that, look, we use this, the autopilot. You might think you’re using the joystick, but actually, you steer the ship with your finger. This is where you set the different coordinates. That’s it, here are the binoculars, the commander’s chair, the ship’s wheel, and this wonderful view in front of you. Wow, guys, these binoculars are really good, look at this, how incredible. There’s always coffee and tea, but in the morning, in case you miss the breakfast time, it stays until later, there are snacks, you can have breakfast here. There are even snacks later in the night, if you feel hungry and want to get something to eat or drink, take it to you cabin, or eat here, that’s fine too. This awesome central area is called The Den, there’s a piano here, there’s a bar, it’s also where the excursions part is located, where you can choose and purchase your next cruise, the photographs area, everything is here. I’m sitting here, with my drink, as always, and more than that, here is a curiosity: there is a TV here, look, for you to see the ship’s current location, you can follow it on the map and see exactly where it is, what the temperature will be like, the weather forecast, it’s awesome, a beautiful area indeed, with different activities options. Let’s visit the ship’s buffet restaurant. It is really good, and works for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At breakfast there are bread, fruits, cereals, and even a pancake station. At lunch and dinner, lots of salads, cheeses, cold cuts, and a variety of meals. Not to mention the desserts, of course. As on every cruise, on Azamara Quest you have laundry services that you can hire, they are paid separately, however, especially on long Cruises, it is very useful, after all, no one likes to keep dirty clothes for so many days. Let me tell you something not common though, that we really liked on this ship. There is a self-service laundry here, it is open every day from 8 am 10 pm. I will show you what it’s like. There are machines for you to wash, dry, and iron your clothes. Here you can have this laundry service for free, that’s really cool, especially on this long Cruise we’re taking. We’ve already used it, it’s really convenient, soap is also provided for free for everyone to use. Let’s go inside then and see what it’s like. Just take a look at our situation now. We are by the pool, at a snack bar called The Patio. In fact, here’s a tip, this is where you can have several snacks throughout the day, everyhing is delicious, tropical, there are hamburgers, a drink to cool off, but look at the weather changing outside, a strong fog has just fallen, and we are here, enjoying these delicious drinks, how about that? We’ve scheduled a 75-minute massage, so it’s long, full body. We are paying 99 dollars, plus 18% service fee. A tip for you, this is not the original price, you can always bargain a little. Let’s enjoy the massage then, and explore a little more of the spa. Next to the spa, on deck 9, there is a huge, well equipped gym, we came at lunch time to show it to you without anyone, this way you can do whatever you want. There are several treadmills, a lot of weight training equipment, there are even dance classes, spinning classes, and the coolest thing is that you sit here to do your exercises looking at this spectacular sea. It’s awesome, really well equipped, I loved it. This is a small Cruise ship, so, the gym is wonderful. Then, you can do your exercises here, admiring this wonderful sea. I’m not going to lie, we hardly exercise. We are now in the most exclusive area of the ship, The Sanctum Terrace, or the Sanctuary Terrace, the spa at Azamara Quest. This is the only place from where we can have a frontal view of the ship, you have to pay separately to be here, only 25 cabins per trip can access this space. What does this special place has to offer? Well, a giant Jacuzzi, precisely from where Fábio is filming me, and an area with sun loungers, swings, chairs, for you to relax quietly, because as I said, access is controlled. As I am not fool, I’m recording from here, in the warm water, while Tiago is there, walking around, explaining everything to you, facing the cold weather, Because this cruise is very cold the south of Argentina is really cold, Ushuaia, Falkland Islands, it’s all frosty. After all, we’re talking about Antarctica! Needless to say that having a warm space to be is amazing. There are also the warm Jacuzzis, located in the central area of the ship, however, as they are outside, there is a lot of wind, no one is able to use them when it is cold, only when the weather is better. This place is completely protected, in the front and in all sides as well, due to that we can use it every day, except when the ship is shaking too much, as they close all external areas. Not to mention the terrific view. By the way, there are bubbles in here, it’s a whirlpool bath, there are several buttons for you to control and have a hydromassage. We didn’t turn them on because of the noise, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to hear us. It’s spectacular indeed, let’s keep enjoying it here. We’re going to see penguins! we’re going to take the car, it’s a long distance, t’s about 200 km to get to the place known as a penguin sanctuary. Let’s see how it will be? We’ve arrived at Punta Tombo Park, where there is one of the largest colonies of Patagonian penguins. They are normally here from September until April. In September they start to arrive, in April the last ones are leaving. We expect to see a lot of them. We are almost at the end of the season. There’s a trail here, it’s said that you can already see penguins along it, but it’s a long way to get to the end of it by the sea. Let’s explore this park then. I’m looking forward to it. Comes with us. The trail is one and a half kilometers long, you have to control the time. You have from two to two and a half hours to spend here. You are advised not to stop along the way, to get to the end first because that’s where it’s most beautiful, it’s almost impossible though, as they’re so close here. There is a well-marked path you have to follow when you are walking here to get to the sea. The problem is that very often you may find a penguin crossing the path, and then there is a rule, you have to stay at least 1.5 to 2 m far from him and never block the penguin’s path, the priority is always theirs. – He is not worried about you, Tiago. – He isn’t indeed! So, they come here, lay the eggs, the babies are born, they take care of them for three months, then they change feathers, when they finish they are ready to go back to the sea, and then they live for about 6 months in the ocean, they even sleep in the water. It’s interesting indeed. There are many of them, they are all curious here looking at me. One is passing here walking. That’s it, let’s continue.
